I have to share why I love Disney's Pocahontas so much (hideous errors in Native American representation notwithstanding):

1. I watched this for the first time in the fifth grade. In the fifth grade, I had a crush on a certain boy, who was the teeniest bit Native American. Somehow, in my mind, this connected to Pocahontas. Oh yes, and I fancied he had a chin like John Smith's. I also fancied myself in the role of Pocahontas, this being confirmed one day during recess when we girls had a discussion. Someone put forth my name as Pocahontas, and I, of course, said no, I think _____ is more like her. We had already established my certain crush as John Smith, you see, and I didn't want to be obvious. But I hugged that first suggestion to myself and have remembered it ever since. Therefore, watching it reminds me of that time when crushes were so innocent and all I ever hoped for was an admission of love.

2. Pocahontas is one of the only Disney "Princesses" who rescues the man instead of the other way around, and I find I like that. I think I'm naturally one who will take over and lead when no one stronger or willing to be dominating is present, so I relate well to that. Plus, John Smith is still ever so masculine without being a pushy bore, cause he saves Pocahontas's father from being shot.

3. I really really love "Colors of the Wind." Back in fifth grade, I bought both the piano and violin scores so I could play the songs. Oh, and I love the love song, "If I Never Knew You." Beautiful melancholia.

4. I've always had a fascination with Native American culture so I thought any sort of exposure offered was good. And the ending moral message was quite good... we're all savages underneath, and so on, and so forth.

5. The themes of saving the environment and not imposing our will on nature!

To be continued as I think of more reasons.

BTW: current correct Oscar predictions-- 4/7 already presented, as of this time. Predicted correctly for supporting actor and actress. Then again, they were very predictable. I'm waiting for the big upset... best not be in best picture!

Fashion report to come.
