OH MY GOSH!
Last night was INCREDIBLE. INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, I'll give you a play by play of the events.
I won the tickets. I ask Kate to go with me, and then she looks at the website and sees that it's supposed to be a 21+ party. Much frantic back and forth ensued, during which it seemed like the whole thing was going to be improbable. But after I called the club and confirmed it was for 18+, we were set. So I got gussied up and met Kate. We took a cab up the ten blocks and found a long line. We couldn't tell if it was for the Queer Eye party or not, so we asked some random people and they said it was. We wait about twenty minutes, get to the front, only to be told we were in the wrong line.
They directed us to the side entrance, where there was a table and--get this--a red carpet. I coolly tell them I'm on the list, they check my name, and we get two wristbands. Hee hee, I got to walk on the red carpet in front of a lot of photographers. Granted, none of them took pictures, but still! Pretty nifty.
We get inside, where it's not too crowded yet and stake out a spot. Nothing happened for a good hour and half, except for lots of body-booming music and people watching. Many many gay men were there. Kate and I stood next to a huge group of them, and we thought it was unusual that an older looking woman was with them. Later on, Kate heard one of the men say to another, "She has no gaydar whatsoever," referring to the older woman. We thought that was hilarious.
Finally, some guy announced the Fab Five, who were up on the second tier balcony. They did their waving thing and announced Simone Denny, who sang the Queer Eye theme song. She's a pretty damn good performer. After that, there was a space of about ten minutes where they adjusted stuff for Kylie. And then... and then!
The Fab Five came on stage and did a speech, thanking us for coming, and then announcing--Kylie Minogue!!!
The music started, the stage became blue lit, and out she came with her dancers! Her first song was "Come Into My World," one of my favorites. She was absolutely beautiful in person, tiny and flawless--exactly like the photographs of her. Next was "Red Blooded Woman," her new song which I also love. Really, I love all her songs I've heard. Then she said, "Now we're going to do a little old school," or something like that and she did "Locomotion"! Then was Kate's favorite, "Can't Get You Out of My Head." Then "Slow," which was beautiful, and last of all, "Love at First Sight," which she did with actual musical instruments instead of electronic. It sounded really awesome. All along, everyone was screaming "Kylie!" and singing along to the music, which was great. At the end, she gave a little speech, cause apparently she's never performed in New York, so I got to be one of the first New Yorkers to see her! Everyone kept screaming and she was laughing, telling us to shush. And she was sweet, because she acknowledged her band and dancers and told us to applaud for them. Her speaking voice is high, and thin with the Australian accent, which surprised me because her singing voice was lower. She went off stage then, and it was over.
Kate and I pushed our way out, and incidentally, got caught up with a lesbian couple. Hrm, observation: we saw two couples where one was much less attractive than the other, and older as well. This was one of them, and the uglier one wouldn't let go of her woman so Kate and I had to let go hands to let them pass.
Just a little anecdote. So we got our coats, and... a gift bag!!!!!
That's right, on top of everything else, we got a giftbag filled with at least $125 worth of goodies. Definitely not on par with the stars, but hey, it was pretty damn good for me, since I didn't expect anything. What was in the bag: Vera Wang for Men, Fekkai for Men shampoo, huge Pier 1 candle, Crest Whitestrips, earrings, change purse, Queer Eye theme song single, 3 months of RealRhapsody service, Diesel Spring-Summer '04 collection DVD, toothbrush, mirror, Dentyne Ice, and a cellphone magnet.
Damn straight. And all of this for the low price of: FREE.
Le sigh. Now that I'm done bragging, I'm going to go and watch me some
Friends.
